Achromatic Cues Are Important for Flower Visibility to Hawkmoths and Other Insects

چکیده
Studies on animal colour vision typically focus the chromatic aspect of colour, which is related to spectral distribution, and disregard achromatic aspect, intensity (“brightness”) a stimulus. Although component often most reliable for object recognition because it fairly context independent, may provide signal under specific conditions, example at night when light low. Here we make case importance cues in plant-pollinator signalling, based experimental data naïve Deilephila elpenor Macroglossum stellatarum hawkmoths, optical modelling synthesising published experiments bees, flies, butterflies moths. Our show that ecologically relevant levels hawkmoths express strong preference brighter stimuli. We discuss our findings often-assumed dichotomy between discrimination, versus vision, evolution floral visual signals.

Flower tracking in hawkmoths: behavior and energetics.
As hovering feeders, hawkmoths cope with flower motions by tracking those motions to maintain contact with the nectary. This study examined the tracking, feeding and energetic performance of Manduca sexta feeding from flowers moving at varied frequencies and in different directions. In general we found that tracking performance decreased as frequency increased; M. sexta tracked flowers moving a...
متن کاملCombining achromatic and chromatic cues to transparency.
We investigated how achromatic and chromatic cues interact to produce transparency. Observers were shown six-region stimulus displays similar to those used by R. Kasrai and F. A. A. Kingdom (2001) and made adjustments of the color and luminance attributes of one of the filter regions to achieve the best percept of transparency. The dependent measure of primary interest was setting reliability, ...
متن کاملNon-bee insects are important contributors to global crop pollination.
Wild and managed bees are well documented as effective pollinators of global crops of economic importance. However, the contributions by pollinators other than bees have been little explored despite their potential to contribute to crop production and stability in the face of environmental change. Non-bee pollinators include flies, beetles, moths, butterflies, wasps, ants, birds, and bats, amon...
متن کاملAre insects flower constant because they use search images to find flowers?
Many insects which gather nectar or pollen exhibit flower constancy, a learned fidelity to a particular species of plant. Recent studies suggest that foraging insects may use a perceptual mechanism akin to a search image to detect flowers, in a manner analogous to the way that predators search for prey. This has emerged as an alternative (but not mutually exclusive) explanation for flower const...
متن کاملNeeds Assessment Competencies: Are They Important for Extension Educators?
The purpose of this study was to determine the importance of eleven professional competencies related to needs assessment and program development; a secondary purpose was to identify the best time these competencies should be learned. The study followed a survey research design, in which 441 randomly selected extension educators in the North Central Region of the United States responded to a qu...
